Q: Separate or Combined Components?

Integrated audio/video receivers are an easy way to control all of your entertainment gear in one box. It's not the best solution for everyone, though, and you'll hear people in the audio world talk about "separates," which means getting separate amplifiers and preamplifiers, or combined preamplifiers and processors, to drive their systems.

In a setup of separates, the components and signals are isolated from one another, which could eliminate contamination, cross talk and other problems that affect audio performance. Separate preamps and amps also allow you the flexibility to change your system as needed. Many separates can employ modular, card-cage designs, flash upgrades, and other techniques so you don't have to make a wholesale switch every time a new technology becomes available.

Of course, there are advantages to audio/video receivers with integrated amplifiers, such as affordability and convenience.
