Q: What are some of the key differentiating features between home control systems?

Range of Control

Some systems are designed to control a few different components, like lighting and thermostats. Others can control everything from audio/video distribution systems and motorized draperies to security systems and surveillance cameras.

Programmability

Some systems must be professionally programmed (this can cost as much as $250 an hour) while other systems can be set up easily by a do-it-yourselfer.

Wiring

Some systems require that dedicated home control wiring be added to your home, something that's relatively easy to do while a home is under construction. Other systems need no additional wiring to operate, instead using a home's existing electrical wiring or wireless radio frequency technologies to transmit commands to lights, thermostats, audio gear and other devices.

Proprietary or Open

Proprietary home control systems are comprised of devices from a single manufacturer, while other open, or standards-based systems, can include devices from a variety of manufacturers.
